CEU Requirements for ASID

Overview
In April, ASID National enacted a new membership bylaw which requires practitioner members to complete 6 CEU credit hours of continuing education every two years. The first two year self-reporting period will begin January 1, 2008, with the CEU's due to be completed before December 31, 2009. For more information, contact ASID National.

Here's information from the Florida Professional and Business regulations which outlines the requirements for a FL licensed designer:

State of Florida CEU Requirements for State Licensed Interior Designers:

If you are a licensed interior designer through the State of Florida, their CEU guidelines differ from those required by ASID. Unfortunately, these two entities do not track and/or recognize each others requirements. You are expected to understand what is required to maintain both your membership status in ASID as well as your license with the State of Florida. The State guidelines are as follows:

Information for Licensees:
Continuing Education Requirement
Both architects and interior designers are required to complete 20 hours of educational instruction or training, in subjects or courses approved by the Board, each biennium prior to the license expiration date. A minimum of 16 hours must be in technical and professional subjects related to safeguarding life, health, property and promoting the public welfare.

Core Course Requirement
All architects and interior designers must complete a 4-hour core course on the building code within 2 years of initial licensure. The Board considers the building code course part of the 20 continuing education hours required per biennium. More information may be accessed by contacting the Department of Community Affairs. Core courses are available online at the Building Code Information System website.

Advanced Course Requirement
Licensees are required to obtain a minimum of 2 hours of continuing education by completing an approved provider’s specialized or advanced course, approved by the Florida Building Commission, on the Florida Building Code, relating to the licensee’s respective area of practice for future renewals. The core course is a pre-requisite to the advanced course. Please note that the core course is different from any advanced courses that may be offered. One cannot be used in lieu of the other. Licensees are advised to verify the course validity before attending the course.

6 Hours Every Two Years
Practitioner members of the Society are required to complete 6 contact hours of continuing education coursework (equal to 0.6 CEUs) every two years. To qualify, coursework must be taken from an approved provider.

Biyearly Self-Reporting
Practitioner members of the Society will certify compliance through an online self-reporting mechanism. The first two-year reporting period will begin on January 1, 2008, with 0.6 CEUs due before December 31, 2009. The second two-year reporting period will begin on January 1, 2010, and so on. Online self-reporting begins January 2008.

Random Audits
All members who fail to self-report their compliance with the policy will be automatically audited. Additionally, approximately 3 percent of members will be randomly selected for audit during each reporting period.

Failure to Comply
Any member who fails to comply with the continuing education requirements will be subject to a termination of Society membership in accordance with the requirements of the policy.
